Jaimie Cahlil
Fully aware my art is unusual in its expression of soulful down-to-earth spirituality, here I present my work as *Transpersonal Art - a recognised genre (see Monika von Moltke). There is much art, though little at present mainstream, which essentially ‘transpersonal’. (Eg: Kahlil Gibran, Rabindranath Tagore, Cecil Collins, Samual Palmer, Kathe Kollwicz, Shakti Maira…)
Inviting you to my art website (and *Transpersonal psychotherapy site – cahlil-therapy.co.uk), and the paintings here, you may notice the presence of light in each drawing and painting. Age five and daydreaming in school, an intensely powerful softest light descended from far above, entering through my crown chakra and into my heart. Immediately, I knew I was loved…by something immense, far beyond. My awareness of this ever-present ‘light’ is always with me, and expressed through my work.
I work intuitively, trusting whatever comes. However, the work of translating each vibrantly energetic, often subtle, image I receive…onto paper or canvas…is demanding – requiring the patient process of feeling my way.
Though now in Cheltenham, I received my training in fine art (1972-75) at Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, housed then in the Ashmolean Museum – where I studied highly treasured drawings by such artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael – each one, on request, simply placed unprotected flat on the table in front of me! In my training, I was required to draw the human figure from memory, showing each muscle affecting the external shape of the body, each with its anatomical name and the way each worked. So, all images of the human figure in my work come through a combination of memory and sensing how the figure feels to embody.
